What is Freelance Writing?
Freelance writing is a huge field that covers many types of writing, and many ways to earn money as a writer.
What types of writing are common for freelance writers?
- Newspaper articles
- Magazine articles
- Blog posts
- Interviews to be published in magazines, newspaper, blogs, websites, etc
- Copywriting
- Content marketing
- Social Media content
- Product descriptions
- Website content for a business
- Ghost writing
There are many more forms of writing that freelance writers regularly do, but the above list covers the most common types of writing.
However, in general, there are two broad categories of freelance writing that are most common:
- Writing for publications, such as newspapers, magazines, blogs, and websites.
- Writing for businesses and individuals
When you’re looking for work, there is generally a different process needed for the two main categories. For example, getting an article published by an established magazine requires a very different approach than getting a contract to produce blog content for a business.
However, there are a few areas of overlap as well.
What is not freelance writing?
As broad as freelance writing is, there are certain types of writing that generally aren’t considered freelance writing. If you’re only interested in doing the following types of writing, then freelance writing is not for you.
- Poetry
- Short Stories
- Novels
- Creative Writing
Of course, as with anything, there are exceptions, and sometimes freelance writers do get paid for their creative writing as part of their freelance work, however this is extremely rare, and far, far, far outside the norm. If you’re only interested in creative writing, then you’ve learned enough from this course to know that freelance writing is not for you.
What are the main benefits of freelance writing?
- You can choose your own clients. As a freelance writer, you get to pick and choose who you work with, and who you don’t work with. If you don’t like working with a client, you can simply let them go. It’s completely up to you.
- You can choose your own hours. The nature of freelancing means you get to work as much or as little as you want. You’re the boss, which means nobody is telling you how much to work, or even when to work. Your hours are completely up to you.
- You can earn a real income. There is real income potential with freelance writing. Yes, it takes time to get established, and it is real work, but there is also real income potential.
